Shakshuka from Tel Aviv

Writer's picture: MonaccoMaxMonaccoMax

The last few days, I strolled through the streets and spotted a cute little restaurant. I took a quick look at the menu and decided to go in. They got me. The meal of the day was Shakshuka. It was really precarious, and I Had to recook it. Actually, Shakshuka is a Middle Eastern dish, has a lot of healthy ingredients and is vegetarian. I felt great afterwards, better than eating a burger, haha. Anyways, I don't want to waste too much time talking about the restaurant, more about the dish. I looked up some easy and conventional recipes with ingredients that you might have at home. Here we go!

Ingredients

  • 4 Fresh Tomatos

  • 700 ml Tomatosugo / or 2 canned tomato

  • 2 Garlic

  • 2 onion

  • 3 Eggs

  • Oil

  • 20g butter

  • Salt / Pepper

  • cumin

  • Paprikapowder

  • Paprika (i took the yellow one)

  • Cilantro

Instructions

First, we chop everything finely and start with heating the oil and a little piece of butter in the pan. Put in the chopped onions and garlic and wait until they are translucent.

Then you add the Tomato Sugo. The significant advantage here to take your Sugo is already precooked and reduced. Of course, you are free to take tomatoes out of a can and remember that you have to cook a little longer and reduce the sauce.

Add the herbs and season everything.

In the next step, you create 3 little wholes in the tomato sauce for the eggs. Crack the eggs and put them into the ready-made place. Cover the pan and reduce the heat.

In the end, you chop some cilantro and add it to the top. Finish.

Resumé

This meal is to share! It's delicious, and you can enjoy it during the whole day. Appetizer or dinner. It tastes perfect, and I really encourage you to cook it. For the spices, I recommend you to talk with a local Arab shop to get the best quality. The owner might also give you his tips to cook :)
